Project Overview
In 2008, the Nebraska Legislature voted to move the State Fair to Grand Island with construction beginning in 2009. The move displaced a significant number of the city’s existing soccer, softball, and baseball fields. Realizing the potential for expanded recreation opportunities Eagle Scout Park, the athletic complex was relocated and renamed the Veterans Athletic Complex.
Phase One construction was completed in 2010 and consists of twelve acres of soccer and four large softball/baseball fields. These fields see extraordinary use for youth and adult softball, baseball, and soccer league play as well as tournaments that bring visitors to Grand Island.
Phase Two construction, included the addition of six youth softball/baseball fields, a new additional bathroom/concession building, additional parking, picnic areas, and a splash pad. The expansion will help alleviate scheduling conflicts with local leagues and provide increased capacity to meet the demand needs of the foreseeable future. With this expansion, the complex has the capacity needed to attract state and regional level tournaments that in turn increase the opportunity to attract visitors to the community. These visitors can be expected to have a significant local economic impact.
