Project Overview
In January 2016, the GIAEDC, in partnership with Governor Ricketts and Hendrix Genetics, announced Hendrix's expansion to Grand Island. In May of that same year, Hendrix Genetics broke ground on their $18 million egg hatchery facility, located at Platte Valley Industrial Park-East. In addition to the main hatchery in Grand Island, 8 egg-laying and 3 pullet barns will be constructed within 100 miles of Grand Island. The outlying barns will support the hatchery and its daily operation.
The expansion is the result of market demand. The U.S. population consumes nearly 260 eggs per person per year. With that, there are 300 million egg-laying hens supplying eggs to consumers in the United States. The Grand Island hatchery will contribute to the world demand by producing 24 million egg-laying chicks per year beginning summer 2017.
Construction of the $18 million facility was complete in August 2017. A Grand Opening was held August 15, 2017 with nearly 600 Grand Island residents, State of Nebraska representatives, and Hendrix Genetics officials to break in the new operation.
